Most descriptions of this coast are written for holidays. What follows is meant for the other question: what it is like to live here for part or all of the year — distances, everyday infrastructure, and what there is to do on a Tuesday in November.

Where it lies

The stretch west of Marbella is known as the New Golden Mile. From the site of our Sunway Residence project the distances are 5 km to Estepona town, 25 km to Puerto Banús, 36 km to Marbella and 83 km to Málaga Airport. Essence Residence lies on the same stretch, 10 km from Puerto Banús. In practice that means a coastal town within a few minutes, the larger centres within half an hour, and the airport reachable without an overnight stay before an early flight.

Estepona also sits between two airports. Besides Málaga at 83 km, Gibraltar is 40 km away, with the town itself at 45 km. For buyers from Britain and northern Europe that widens the choice of routes and shortens the drive at either end, particularly outside the summer schedule when connections to Málaga thin out.

The town

Estepona has around 78,000 inhabitants and has grown steadily over the past decade. Its old town is a grid of narrow white streets planted with flower pots, with the Plaza de las Flores at its centre. Large-format murals cover facades across the centre and the neighbouring districts, catalogued by the town hall as a numbered route. The Orchidarium, a municipal glasshouse, holds a collection of orchid species. Along La Rada beach the promenade runs for roughly three kilometres; at its western end are the marina and the fishing port, and in the centre the covered food market.

Golf, beach and activity

Around Sunway Residence the arrangement is straightforward: the course of Azata Golf begins at the edge of the development, with Valle Romano Golf Club and Estepona Golf a few minutes further by car, and Estepona town 5 km away. The beaches on this western side are Arroyo Vaquero and Guadalobón, which form one long stretch of dark sand, Playa del Cristo in its sheltered cove beside the port, and Playa de la Rada along the town promenade.

Essence Residence lies further east on the New Golden Mile, where the beaches of Saladillo, Sol Villacana and Guadalmansa are a few minutes by car. Golf is the defining activity of this stretch: Los Flamingos Golf Club, El Paraíso Golf Club and La Resina Golf & Country Club are all nearby. For racket sports there are the Racquet Club Villa Padierna and the Bel-Air Tennis Club, both used year-round rather than seasonally.

Inland the ground rises quickly: the Sierra Bermeja reaches about 1,450 m at the Los Reales summit, and the walking route known as the Paseo de los Pinsapos leads through Spanish fir forest growing on peridotite rock, a soil combination found in few other places. The starting point above Peñas Blancas is a drive of some fifteen kilometres from the town.

Everyday life

Estepona has had its own public hospital since 2020, the Hospital de Alta Resolución, run by the Costa del Sol public health agency, alongside health centres and a substantial number of private practices serving international residents. Northern European residents are numerous enough that most administrative and medical matters can be handled in English or German, though Spanish makes daily life easier. For the climate, the nearest long-run reference station is Málaga Airport, where the 1981–2010 normals give an annual mean of 18.5 °C and 2,905 hours of sunshine per year. Shopping covers the ordinary and the occasional: Lidl, Aldi and Mercadona are a few minutes away, while El Corte Inglés in Puerto Banús and the La Cañada centre in Marbella are the addresses for anything larger. Eating out follows the seasons rather than a tourist calendar — the market in the morning, the port for fish, a chiringuito on the sand in summer, and, at the other end of the range, the dining rooms at Villa Padierna. On the Estepona side the fixed points of an ordinary week are the old town, the marina and Las Camelias park, all within a short drive.

Our two projects in this area

Casalia Homes markets two developments on this stretch on an exclusive basis. They are third-party developments, not cooperativa projects, and we state that distinction wherever they appear. Sunway Residence comprises 48 residences of two and three bedrooms and penthouses in a gated community with pool and gardens, 5 km from Estepona town. Essence Residence offers apartments of two to four bedrooms and penthouses, with spa, heated indoor pool and coworking, 10 km from Puerto Banús.
